What Cars Need Before and After Long Distance Travel

 In Neal's How-To's

Summer is coming to an end in the Durham area, but not all the fun. Thinking of a long distance drive for an upcoming holiday? Planning to drive that one last car load for college? Either way, now is a good time to consider what vehicles need before and after long distance drives.

The best car maintenance will be taking it into a professional car garage. It is our job to keep your vehicle running smoothly, safely, and economically. Here are a few things to keep in mind before and after driving long distance.

CHECK MOTOR OIL.

Car garages talk a lot about motor oil. We’ve talked a lot about motor oil in our Decoding Motor Oil series, and it’s not without good reason. Motor oil keeps everything running smoothly. It collects the debris and helps maintain engine temperatures as well. It is important for engine health to have optimal oil levels and quality before and after a long distance road trip.

CHECK CAR AC.

AC in North Carolina is a pretty much must. Be sure to check refrigerant, compressors, clutch and belt to make sure you have a comfortable ride.

CHECK COOLING SYSTEM.

Radiator, coolant, pumps, all parts of the cooling system are important to keep the engine from overheating.

CHECK TIRES.

Tire pressure. The righttire pressure quickly add up to dollars when it comes to fuel economy and long distance driving. Check your tire pressure every 1000 miles during your trip. Be sure to check the pressure in your spare as well.
Tire tread and ware. Because you might have driven your tires long distances, tire rotation might be in order either before or after. Tire rotation is recommended every 5-8000 miles to prolong the life of your tires and keep them well balanced. Checking tire treads before and after a long trip will make driving safer. Also, don’t forget to have a spare tire and a patch kit ready in case.

CHECK BRAKES.

CHECK TRANSMISSION.

If your car is nearing the recommended service time, it might be a good time to go ahead and get it checked and cleaned.

CHECK HEADLIGHTS AND WIPERS. Be safe on the road! Make sure your head lights and wipers are clean and operating.
